Beauty and the Beet?

[vc_row][vc_column width=”2/3″][vc_column_text]Many people are aware of the plethora of health benefits of eating beets from root to leafy tip. Benefits range from helping lowering blood pressure, to research claiming to helping to cure cancer or at least keep certain strains from metastasizing. It is not however a very well known fact that the beet is good for our vanity as well. Ancient Greek literature depicts the goddess of love, Aphrodite, eating beetroot to retain her beauty.

When you look at a beet it is hard to think beauty, it is often depicted as the standard plan old root vegetable. However, when you start peeling back the outer layer, you find the diamond in the rough. This what got me to thinking as I was peeling a beet, this vegetable is so beautiful I wonder if it has any beauty secrets for me, weird I know, but this is how my twisted mind thinks. I started to research, low and behold, beets hold secrets to healthy glowing skin and beautiful hair.

Beetroot juice helps to prevent and cure inflammation on the face like acne and pimples. It also works to cleanse blood of impurities cleansing away toxins, it helps to diminish excess water retention, and helps with the removal of dead cells of the skin to replenish new cells, all giving you a healthy glow. The antioxidants in this little root pack a powerful punch protecting against the effects of premature aging, and even has anti-aging effects. There is a phytochemical called Lycopene a type of carotene, that help maintain elasticity in the skin and acts like a sun screen of sorts, protecting against sun burn and skin cancer.

Many of the nutrients in beets like calcium, vitamin B and C help enable blood circulation to the scalp which helps hair growth, moisturizes the scalp, helps with dandruff, and improves the quality, thickness and shine of hair. If these aren’t enough reasons for you to look into spa treatments for hair and skin with beets or at least have a juice once in a while, check this out, it can even prevent hair loss!

While there are tons of benefits to consuming and using beets, there are a few things to consider as well. Excess use of beets can cause intestinal or stomach discomfort and upset, seeing that beets are a natural laxative and diuretic. You should dilute beet juice otherwise you may end up with diarrhea. You should not drink more then a ½ glass to glass of beet juice because it can lower blood pressure fast and drastically. It is powerful stuff so small doses are fine, and don’t freak if your stool or urine turn red, this is normal. So it turns out the beet doesn’t play the roll of beast but that of beauty, on the inside and out. Mimi always says to never judge a book by it’s cover. Lesson learned.
