DIY: May Day/ Mother’s Day Baskets

DIY Garden Gift, Kid Fun Project, Gift from the heart

This tradition was from a time long gone by in American heritage, back in a more innocent time. On this day one would place baskets often made of paper on a neighbors door knob filled with flowers, candies and treasure with well wishes at night then knock on the door and run away. I think the sweetest tradition was when boys and girls would place one on their sweetheart’s door. It is said that if a boy left one and knocked and got caught it is a disgrace, but if a girl leaves a basket on her bow’s door and he does not catch her it is again a disgrace on the boy.

“Such a twanging of bells and rapping of knockers; such a scampering of feet in the dark; such droll collisions as boys came racing round corners, or girls ran into one another’s arms as they crept up and down steps on the sly; such laughing, whistling, flying about of flowers and friendly feeling—it was almost a pity that May-day did not come oftener.” This is a scene right from Louisa May Alcott’s Jack and Jill, which depicts this May Day basket tradition.

So sweet is this tradition I wanted to bring it back this year in our household by having Tristan help to make a basket for me and his Mimi for Mother’s day this year. Now I tend to rather like giving plants then cut up flowers that die and in my opinion are a bit of a waste. So our baskets are going to be happy little plant baskets that can later be placed in the garden or hung from decking. I asked Tristan what we wished for Mimi and Mommy this year and we wrote the saying’s on the artwork we later Mod Podged on the cans. As usual I try to make my projects with some sort of recycled materials, this time was recycled tomatoes cans. I just love this project and so did Tristan!

Or to get a starry sky technique use salt on wet dark paint or flick white white on dry dark paint with a tooth brush.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][vc_row_inner extra_classes=”processStep”][vc_column_inner align=”center” width=”1/3″][vc_single_image image=”2421″ border_color=”white” img_link_target=”_self” img_size=”medium” alignment=”center” style=”vc_box_outline”][/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=”2/3″][vc_column_text]Place art work on can fold over extra length on top of can and crease to cut to size after dry. Ask your cuties what they wish for their mom or grandmother and write it out on the art work, remember there are two sheets of art work that will over lap so plan that out before writing out messages. When dry, mod podge back of first paper and attach to can, then mod podge top of art work, do to next art work sheet as well. then let dry an hour. Mod podge over art work again. Let dry an hour. I suggest one more Mod Podge cover and dry. Then glue on ribbon to top edge to finish a clean edge. For handle I braided twine tying off ends leaving tasseled ends. Cut twine to the size you wish the handle to be. Then when braided and tied glue on. Place in plant, or if you wish to keep in pot for watering drill small holes in bottom of can.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][vc_row_inner extra_classes=”processStep”][vc_column_inner align=”center” width=”1/3″][vc_single_image image=”2422″ border_color=”white” img_link_target=”_self” img_size=”medium” alignment=”center” style=”vc_box_outline”][/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=”2/3″][vc_column_text]Hang on the receivers door at night if for May Day or Mother’s Day morning and knock.
