The Benefits Of Juicing

[vc_row][vc_column width=”1/1″][vc_column_text]We at Expedition Good Life believe juicing is a must for a healthy life style. There is a plethora of reasons for juicing, but I’m going to focus on three topics I believe are most important.

Do you know why it’s recommended that you buy juices that are not from concentrate? It’s because, if you are buying concentrated juices, a machine called a finisher is used to extract the pulp, seeds and peel from the orange, robbing it of many of its nutrients. Then the juice is put through a process where evaporators eliminate most of the “natural waters” by vacuum and heat, where more nutrients are lost. Then the concentrated juices are chilled to yield frozen concentrated orange juice.   This process strips out the oranges natural essences and oils, more nutrients are lost and then the juices are piped into holding tanks. Now, what’s left of the orange is shipped to another location where they add water and other various components to re-hydrate the orange and add flavors that were stripped away by the concentrating process. Ridiculous, but here is the best part, the manufacturer can still claim 100% pure orange juice. When they process the orange in the finisher, they extract oils and essences from the orange peels and other components that are found in an orange and add it back into the orange juice. The loophole is that there is nothing to declare, because they are using parts of an orange to make their concentrate. Can you imagine the vital nutrients that are missing from a process like this? This is a great reason to juice, but you may be thinking, “I’m good I buy juices not concentrated.” Well, here is something to ponder; why does your orange juice always taste the same? Maybe it’s because after the juice has been squeezed it is transferred to a holding tank where the oxygen is removed, a process called ‘deaeration’, and now the liquid can be kept up to a year without spoilage. This process renders the juice flavorless, so the industry uses “flavor packs” they add back into the juice. You will not find “flavor packs” listed on the ingredient list of your orange juice carton, because the flavor packs are engineered form orange essence and oil, and are derived from the orange, so they do not have to list these additional products. I don’t want my orange juice sitting around for a year, do you? Ask yourself how many nutrients are left in this juice after a year? Also, this is why your juice always tastes the same; the flavor packs are engineered so the formula never changes hence the taste is always consistent.

Here is another great reason to juice. How many fruits and vegetables  does your body require in a day and do you think you can eat that many every day? Well, it is recommended we need five to nine servings a day. That means roughly 2 cups fruit and 2 1/2 cup vegetables. That is not an easy task, especially in our busy everyday lives, so juicing is an easy solution to this dilemma. So how many servings of vegetables or fruit do you believe you can get out of a 16 ounce serving?   According to Claire Georgiou from “Ask The Nutritionist” there are approximately 5-8 servings. This is just a guess, because the exact amount depends on the type of juicer used, how fresh the produce is and how juicy the product. However, if you only get 3 servings you can easily get another 3 from some other source during the day. I find this is an easy and efficient way to be sure I am getting what I need in nutrients every day.

The last reason I recommend juicing daily is, because nutrients enter the bloodstream fast. Juices are easily absorbed into the body through the stomach and intestinal walls and hardly any digestion is required. This gives your body instant energy. When your body doesn’t have to waste energy on digesting food it can expend that energy on getting rid of built up toxins in the body. Your body can start repairing and rebuilding cells, all of which extends your life span.

I hear, probably once a week when I speak to someone about eating more healthy vegetables, the same excuse, “I hate vegetables.” They tell me they know they should eat more vegetables, but they just can’t get them down.
